Nemanja Vidic’s sending off against Chelsea means he will be a crucial loss for Manchester United for the showdown of all showdowns at Anfield this Sunday.
United stuttered in midweek with their morale-breaking loss to Chelsea at the Bridge, but Sir Alex Ferguson will make sure his players are up for the weekend clash with Liverpool.
It’s Dalgish v Ferguson; it’s Liverpool v Man United....here’s a reminder of some great clashes between these two fierce rivals down the years...with the Anfield Reds coming out on top!
Man United 1 Liverpool 4 – March 2009
Ronaldo scored an early penalty at Old Trafford, but Torres, Gerrard, Aurelio and Dossena completed a rout for the visitors. Two lasting memories include Gerrard sprinting towards the touchline and placing a smacker on the Sky camera lens, and Vidic’s overwhelming submission to an ‘unstoppable’ Torres.
Man United 0 Liverpool 1 - December 2000
Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool came up against a rampant United, having failed to beat their greatest rivals for ten years. Due to the law of averages the stage was set for a Liverpool win and the winning goal came courtesy of midfield schemer Danny Murphy’s glided first half free kick.
What made the result more special was the awarding of the free kick, the result of an eccentric hand ball by Gary Neville. Houllier’s troops went on to complete the double over United that season.
Liverpool 4 Man United 0 - September 1990
John Barnes was unstoppable and Steve McMahon was at his marauding best as Liverpool demolished Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 4-0 at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish’s men were hungrier, faster, slicker and more clinical than their rivals.
Let’s hope for more of the same on Super Sunday.
