Arsenal will this summer try to hijack Manchester United's pursuit of Jack Rodwell, reports The Metro.
The England under-21 international has long been courted by the Old Trafford club, but Arsene Wenger is keen to capture the midfielder to help bolster his squad.
Rodwell is valued at £15 million and been tipped for a call-up to the full England squad in the near future.
Wenger will also turn his attention to Rodwell's current teammate at Goodison Park, defender Sylvain Distin.
The Gunners' concerns in defensive came to a head during last Sunday's Carling Cup final when Laurent Koscielny's error gifted Birmingham City victory, and Wenger sees Distin, 33, as the ideal partner for Thomas Vermaelen, who isn't expected to return before the end of the season.
Manager David Moyes has already said he is keen to start negotiating Distin's contract, which has 18 months to run, this summer, but Arsenal will be hoping to snap up the former Manchester City and Portsmouth man at a cut price.
