Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is on the verge of signing a new deal with the Old Trafford club after an impressive first season in English football.

Hernandez has scored 13 goals for Sir Alex Ferguson's men this season and will be rewarded with an extension to his current deal, likely to keep him with the Barclays Premier League leaders until 2016.

The deal is expected to warn off interest from Real Madrid, who are keen to replace the misfiring Karim Benzema, a former United target, and long-term injury victim Gonzalo Higuain.

The 22-year-old signed for United for £8 million last summer, before staring for the Mexico side that reached the second round of the World Cup in South Africa.
