Storm Ciara caused carnage up and down the United Kingdom last weekend.

The storm was strong enough for Manchester City's Premier League game against West Ham at the Etihad Stadium to be called off.

And that meant bad news for Matt Renninger and his pregnant wife, Missy.

Matt, who is originally from New York but now lives in Rhode Island, has been a fan of Man City since 2002.

"I played as them on FIFA," Matt told the Manchester Evening News.

"At the time all the chat in the states was about United and I wasn't really aware there was another Manchester team but I decided I wanted to support a different team, a bit of an underdog as I always went for those kind of teams in the states so it all went from there really."

After 18 years of supporting the side, he finally decided to make the trip across from the United States for a game.

Matt had watched Man City in a pre-season game in the US but described going to watch his side at the Etihad as his 'dream'.

Matt and his wife flew in to Manchester from Boston, which is around a nine-hour flight.

They spent roughly $3,000 on the trip and travelled 3,000 miles.

They arrived on Friday morning and were looking forward to Sunday's game.

However, the game was called off, leaving the pair devastated.

"It was crushing and we were devastated, there's no two ways about it," he continued.

"There were a few tears in the morning and afternoon but we just tried to get on with the day and get outside and do something but it was difficult with the weather as it was."

But they were at least able to see some football on the weekend.

Matt and Missy went to Altrincham to watch their match against Kettering in the National League north.

"It was a great experience," Matt said.

"To see a local neighbourhood club like that was a first for us and the chants and the atmosphere were brilliant. Both goals were scored in front of us.

"Of course it was only meant to be the appetiser.

"If you'd have told me a few weeks ago that would be the only football we'd watch on the trip I would have probably thought 'why are we coming all this way for just that?'

But, despite their misfortune, Matt was not overly disappointed with missing out on watching his side at the Etihad for the first time.

"Worse things have happened," said Matt.

"We were still away on holiday, with each other, not in the office or not at work.

"We'll have to see if we can get back over for a game some time in the future. Hopefully Pep and Sergio are still around then."
