Rodwell close to United move

Manchester United are on the brink of signing Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell, according to The Sun.

Sir Alex Ferguson has long coveted the 20-year-old and has finally matched The Toffees' asking price of £25 million.

The England under-21 international has also interested Arsenal, but Everton's valuation was the stumbling block in the Gunners' negotiations.

United had reportedly made an bid of £15 million in January for the player, but Everton, keen to hold on to him until the end of the season, told the club to up their offer.

The central midfielder has four years remaining on his current deal, which he signed last May.

Rodwell's signing is set to be the first of many midfielders joining Old Trafford this summer, with Ferguson at last set on the replacements for stalwarts Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Ashley Young has also been linked with a £15 million move to the 18-time Premier League champions, as has Sunderland youngster Jordan Henderson.
