Manchester United captain Namanja Vidic is in doubt for tonight’s do or die Champions League clash with Marseille, but Ferguson won’t rule the centre back out of action just yet.
“Vidic got a knock on Saturday and was getting treatment," said Ferguson. "Hopefully he will be OK. He’s tough enough, but couldn’t train."
Vidic missed the Liverpool derby because of suspension, following a red card in the Chelsea game. He returned for the FA Cup tie with Arsenal, contributing to the 2-0 victory and a much needed win to increase United’s confidence.
Without Vidic and Ferdinand, Ferguson will have to turn to Chris Smalling and Wes Brown to play the centre. Brown has started just 3 games this season, and is definitely not first choice for the Manchester United manager. Smalling and Brown played together in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, and did nothing to help United in their disconcerting defeat.
Should Manchester United concede an away goal tonight, they will need two goals to equal the score line. While United are favourites to move past Marseille to the quarter finals, they will sorely miss Vidic’s experience and leadership in their charge for the Champions League trophy.
But Ferguson will be counting on his players to win tonight, with or without their captain.
“The team needs to step up and needs to perform to win the league.” Ferguson told reporters. “It’s an important time, with being involved in three tournaments. But we are experienced enough to do what we’re doing at the moment, taking each game as it comes.”
Sources are saying that if there is any chance Vidic can play, Ferguson will have him out on the pitch tonight.
