Liverpool are reportedly moving to sign Aston Villa playmaker Stewart Downing to accompany fellow Villa star Ashley Young, according to reports.
Downing was on loan at Sunderland from Middlesbrough for 6 years before moving to Aston Villa in 2009. The left winger is lethal when partnered with fellow winger and striker Young.
Young had been strongly linked to Liverpool in the January transfer window, but the Kop were unable to secure a deal before deadline. Young has reportedly turned down a new contract from Villa because he wants to play Champions League.
To bring Downing over to Liverpool as well as Young would not only mean both players get used to playing in the red jersey quickly, but they can also play off each other’s strengths to reinforce Liverpool’s attack in their 2011/12 season charge.
Just recently, Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier praised Downing’s efforts so far this season. "Stewart is outstanding. Anyone who has seen practically all our games will have noticed he has improved a lot,” he told the club’s website.
"He's more confident, he can pass, he can score, his goal was fantastic against Blackburn too.”
Kenny Dalglish is reportedly set to make a move on the England international by the end of the week, with Downing valued at £10 million.
