Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be on his final straw with Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick after the 29 year old told reporters he ‘didn’t fancy’ being put in defence should he be called by Ferguson to the position.

With Ferguson reportedly planning to spend £100 million in the summer, speculation is growing that despite signing a new contract, the United manager is looking for a midfielder who is more flexible and will be trading Carrick in the summer period.

Sources say Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson is high on Ferguson’s wish list for summer buys, with the midfielder worth £15 million, according to the Daily Express. The paper has reported that Ferguson is willing to offer Carrick as an exchange to sweeten the deal for Sunderland manager Steve Bruce.

Carrick told newspapers yesterday that despite the growing injury list at Manchester United, he was not planning on stepping in for the gaping holes being left in defence by big name players Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea and Johnny Evans.

The midfielder by trade told reporters, “I said to [assistant manager] Mike Phelan ‘I don’t fancy that again’.

“It is never nice to get the injuries of course. It is disappointing when you pick up a number in a similar position. But I don’t think we are that desperate yet and hopefully I won’t be called upon."
