Ipswich have allowed defender Tommy Smith to join neighbours Colchester on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old featured in the World Cup last summer for New Zealand but has not made the first team under new manager Paul Jewell

Smith moves to the League One side for some regular action.

Jewell said: "I spoke to John Ward and Tommy is going there until the end of the season."

He added: "It will be a good opportunity for him to play regularly and we can get a good look at him.

"Then he can come back to us next season with a good run of games under his belt."
