Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is the latest player to heap praise on new recruit David Luiz.

The Brazilian defender has been a sensation at Stamford Bridge after arriving in west London in January, and the former Benfica star was again influential in the weekend win over Manchester City.

"He's been fantastic for us since he came here," Essien told SkySports.

"We need his type of player at Chelsea. He's done a great job for us. We take every game as it comes, we'll work hard in every game and see what happens," said the Ghanaian in closing reference to the title race.

The Blues sit nine points off Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United with a game in hand, and Carlo Ancelotti's side still have faint hopes of retaining their title.

"We take every game as it comes, we'll work hard in every game and see what happens," the 28-year-old continued.

"We'll see. We'll have to keep believing that we can do it. There's a long way to go. We have to fight for every point."

Luiz, who has instantly gained a cult following at the Bridge, will undoubtedly be crucial in the remaining clashes this season and the €25m centre back has already started paying back that fee.
