Chelsea pundit Pat Nevin has predicted that Brazilian international David Luiz will become a legendary defender, echoing Carlo Ancelotti’s beliefs that Luiz is one of the ‘best in the world’.
In a blog for Chelsea’s official website, Nevin had nothing but nice things to say about 23 year old Luiz. “My comment after his debut on national radio that 'he may well already be the best footballer playing in defence in England' is no longer being ridiculed,” the 47 year old said.
“I am saying no more, we all know what he already is and what he can become.”
Nevin also praised Luiz’s personal nature, joking that he might allow his daughter to date him if she were old enough. “He seems such a nice chap as well as being brilliant.
“[Luiz] has been the catalyst for a run that has taken Chelsea from being absolute no hopers for the title at one stage to having a chance.”
Chelsea are currently sitting in third place on the Barclays Premier League table, nine points adrift from Manchester United. After a nightmare Christmas period which saw Chelsea drop from title leaders to fighting for fourth place, Chelsea now face the possibility of making one of the best comebacks in Barclays Premier League history.
Much of this success at Chelsea in 2011 has been attributed to Luiz, who signed with the club almost literally at the last minute in the January transfer window.
Just last week Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Luiz’s contribution at Stamford Bridge so far, saying Liuz had great potential.
"Luiz will be one of the best defenders in the world in the future,” Ancelotti said.
