Manchester United are planning a summer swoop for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart.
According to caughtoffside.com the 28-year-old Dutchman heads a list of United transfer targets after impressing in his debut season in the Barclays Premier League.
Following his £8million move from Real Madrid last summer, Van der Vaart has been one of Spurs manager Harry Redknapp’s leading lights this campaign – and as such it is highly unlikely he will want to sell one of his star players.
Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to pay up to £25million to bring Van der Vaart to Old Trafford – more than three times what Tottenham paid for him less than twelve months ago.
The move will hinge on whether or not Spurs qualify for next season’s Champions League.
As the North Londoners prepare for a quarter-final clash with Rafa’s former club Madrid, there is now an added incentive to progress, or else they risk losing some of their most valuable assets.
Van der Vaart’s teammate Luka Modric has also been heavily coveted by a number of leading European clubs, both in this country and abroad – with Manchester United again rumoured to be interested in his services.
There is a strong feeling that failure to qualify for the Champions League will force both players to look elsewhere in order to again play against Europe’s elite.
With Manchester United leading the race for the Barclays Premier League title, qualification for them is all but guaranteed.
And the Red Devils will also fancy their chances of progressing further in Europe as they look ahead to an all-English clash against domestic rivals Chelsea.
Though Van der Vaart may feel indebted to Tottenham for helping to revive his stuttering career at the Bernabeau, serious interest from Manchester United may just be too good to turn down.
