Newcastle’s pursuit for an Andy Carroll replacement has been given a boost, with French star Gervinho expressing interest in a move to St James Park.
“Newcastle are a good team, I have been linked to various teams now but I am still under contract at Lille until 2012, so I am not worrying,” the 23 year old told reporters.
Singling out Newcastle will no doubt have Magpie fans excited, with Gervinho capable of playing in both the wing or front positions, making him doubly valuable to Pardew.
Gervinho is rumoured to be considering a move to Newcastle in partnership with fellow French striker Mooussa Sow, in a deal that the Journal has valued at £40 million.
Gervinho and Sow’s French side Lille are currently sitting at top of the Ligue 1 table, and look poised to win the French top flight league for the first time since 1954.
“We are top of the league and I want to win that. At the end of the season we can sit down and see what the next step will be. I want to concentrate on my football,” Gervinho said.
“The Spanish and English leagues are two of the best in the world and it would be a privilege to play there, but I belong to Lille until 2012.
