England manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that Everton duo Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines will both start for England in Tuesday’s friendly against Ghana.
After the withdrawal of several key players who featured in the weekend’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales, the Toffees’ defensive pair looked increasingly likely to feature against the World Cup quarter finalists at Wembley.
In today’s pre-match press conference, Capello confirmed, "Carroll will start and Jagielka will start, along with Baines at left-back too."
After the release of newly reinstated captain John Terry and Tottenham Hotspur’s Michael Dawson following Saturday’s 2-0 victory in Cardiff, Jagielka is set to win his ninth England cap alongside Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill in the heart of the Three Lions’ backline.
And with Ashley Cole also sent back to Chelsea to prepare for the domestic run-in after winning his 88th cap for his country, opportunity knocks for Baines to show what he can do on the international stage in tomorrow night’s friendly encounter.
