England boss Fabio Capello has defended his decision to release key members of his squad.
John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Michael Dawson and Wayne Rooney have all been given permission to return to their clubs, with the Italian eager to maintain a healthy relationship with club managers for the future.
The five players will all be involved in Champions League activity in the coming fortnight, and while the decision has angered some fans it's seen as a necessary step by the Capello.
"I decided the five players to let go because they had just played four games in ten days," the manager told the British media.
"The players in the Premier League are only playing three games, not four. This is a big difference.
"For this reason they are only playing three games in eight days."
