Having already emerged victorious against Frank Lampard in a recent GiveMeSport Facebook poll, Steven Gerrard has now been given the nod over fellow Premier League legend Paul Scholes by our followers.

Gerrard secured 55% of the final vote when he squared off with Lampard in our poll earlier this month. Now, the current Rangers boss has followed that up with an even more emphatic victory over Scholes - having been favoured by 60% of voters.

In terms of major honours, Scholes clearly has the edge over Gerrard.

The former Manchester United man lifted the Premier League trophy no less than 11 times in his career. Gerrard, in contrast, failed to secure even a single domestic league triumph for his beloved Liverpool.

That is not, though, to suggest that Gerrard did not enjoy great success at Anfield, having won eight major honours on Merseyside. The most famous of these wins was, of course, Liverpool's stunning penalty shoot-out victory over AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul.

A Gerrard headed goal helped Liverpool rebound from a 3-0 half-time deficit - going on to draw the match 3-3 in 90 minutes - before, ultimately, taking home the trophy.

Although Scholes won European club football's top prize twice himself, neither occasion saw him make a telling individual contribution in the final.

In terms of international football, Gerrard certainly made a greater impact for England than Scholes did. Finishing up with 114 caps (scoring 21 times in the process), Gerrard's return for his country outshines the 66 caps (and 14 goals) owned by Scholes.

The wider football community have also historically seemed to favour Gerrard over Scholes in terms of awards. Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year on an impressive eight occasions during his career, whilst Scholes only made the cut twice.

The same is true of the UEFA Team of the Year, where Gerrard was named three times, with Scholes never being included. Gerrard even managed to place third in the race for the 2005 Ballon d'Or award - a position which Scholes was never able to match.

The truth of the matter is that both Gerrard and Scholes were magnificent players during their careers - and are rightly considered icons of the clubs with which they are most closely associated.

Gerrard, though, was considered the backbone of his Liverpool side for more than a decade. As great as he was, Scholes cannot really claim the same for Manchester United during his time at Old Trafford.

Overall, it would be hard for many impartial observers to argue too much with our poll result.
