Manchester United star striker Wayne Rooney has heralded Dimitar Berbatov as the player of the season for United, telling the team official website he believes the forwards have been key in taking the club from top four positioning to title leaders over the Christmas period.

When asked who he thought the best player for United was, Rooney replied: “I’d say Berba[tov].

“He’s scored a lot of goals for us including some really important ones and us forwards need to stick together!”

Berbatov is currently the leading goal scorer for United, with 20 league goals and 21 strikes in total so far. The Bulgarian striker is also the current leading goal scorer in the Barclays Premier League, with Carlos Tevez the only real threat on 18 goals of taking Berbatov’s crown.

A match winner for United at the hardest of times, Berbatov has only started two of his last nine games, but has become a specialist in coming off the bench and scoring when it’s most needed. Just last weekend he scored the winner in the match up with Bolton, netting a goal in the 88th minute and gifting United a much needed three points.

Berbatov will be badly needed for United over the next two months, with all important Champions League, FA Cup and Barclays Premier League games to play.

Sitting at the top of the table, United are five points clear of closest rivals Arsenal, however with Arsenal’s game in hand and the Red Devils facing some tough opponents in the title run in, a match winner like Berbatov will be an important partner for Rooney in United's strikeforce.
