Roger Johnson will decide on his future if and when he is offered a new contract by Birmingham.
The City central defender has only 14 months remaining of his current deal. There was speculation recently that Johnson - and fellow defender Scott Dann - were unhappy at not being offered improved terms although the former has dismissed that as "rubbish".
Johnson has been one of the key players for Birmingham boss Alex McLeish since making the £5 million move to St Andrew's in 2009, but, when asked if he would sign a new deal if City avoid relegation, Johnson said: "I haven't been offered a new contract. I've not said I wouldn't sign it (if offered a new contract). It's a case of when it comes around, it's a decision I have to make."
He added: "I think the speculation regarding me and Scott was just paper talk. We're both in the same boat. It got put out there, and it was just a load of rubbish."
Blues face the possibility like any relegated club of losing some of their leading performers if they do go down, but Johnson is refusing to comment on that sort of speculation.
He said: "It's not for me to say. I don't know. It's up to each player to deal with that."
Johnson formed a solid partnership with Dann until the ex Coventry player suffered a hamstring injury in January that has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
He has since played alongside Liam Ridgewell, Martin Jiranek and Curtis Davies to varying degrees and City have looked less solid in some games.
Johnson said: "When you have different partners, you lose that continuity. Results haven't been that great of late. There's been a lot of chopping and changing all over the team. It isn't ideal but it shouldn't be difficult because they're all good players
"People wouldn't be here unless they were good players so people should just be able to step in. It's about getting a bit of understanding amongst yourselves."
