Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti believes it was destiny that decided Chelsea would play rivals Manchester United in the Champions League quarter final, with the Blues facing a big test in their quest for European glory.
“We have to play against a fantastic team with tradition and history in the Champions League and that counts,” Ancelotti told the Chelsea website.
“The reason why Milan won the Champions League a lot of times is the tradition of the club and for Man United it is the same.
“They have fantastic players and a fantastic coach but history and tradition of this club is also the power.”
Ancelotti has a mixed history with Manchester United – while the Italian has a good record against Sir Alex Ferguson, as both Milan and Chelsea manager, last time Chelsea and Manchester United faced off in the Champions League was in the 2008 final in Moscow, where John Terry missed a penalty kick to give United a 6-5 win on penalties.
“If our players think about the game in Moscow, obviously they are not happy.
“John Terry is not happy about what he lost in that game, other players are not happy also and that could be a good motivation because this could be a destiny.
“It could be the real time that Chelsea do something in the Champions League,” Ancelotti said.
The Chelsea manager is not taking the last league meeting between United and the Blues as a cause to relax, with Chelsea dominating and winning 2-1.
“We arrived in that game in fantastic condition.
“We won the game before 7-1 against Aston Villa and Man United were a little bit down and we played with 100 per cent of our possibility, but to play against them every time is difficult.
“They played better for 45 minutes but we were able to come back to win that game.”
With Chelsea drawing to Stoke on the weekend and Manchester United beating West Ham to extend their lead in the Barclays Premier League table, Champions League glory is more important to the Stamford Bridge club than ever before.
