Salgado content with Kean

Blackburn defender Michel Salgado has sprung to the defence of under-pressure manager Steve Kean.

Rovers are just two points clear of the relegation zone despite a well-earned point against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. Kean is in the fifth month of his first managerial job, having taken over from the sacked Sam Allardyce in December, but is faced with a real battle to safeguard the club's Barclays Premier League status.

However, former Real Madrid defender Salgado said Kean had dealt with a lot during his short spell in charge, having been promoted from first-team coach soon after new owners Venky's took over in December. "We have not spent any money for the past few years and there have been a lot of changes at the club," Salgado said.

"He has taken over and even new players have come in like Jermaine Jones and Roque Santa Cruz. We also have a few players who are ones for the future, so we have to be calm.

"Big changes always take time. The most important thing now is trying to make sure we are safe.

"The only thing we have to talk about is the future. We have to realise that this league is demanding and you cannot relax and we have to get the points to be safe."

The experienced 35-year-old insists he is not worried by the pressure associated with being in a relegation fight.

"Two months ago we were talking about Europe because we hit seventh place," he added.

"This league is very demanding and I think it is the tightest Premier League ever.

"There are 12 teams involved in the fight for survival, so we have to be calm and have a week to work before Birmingham and that is very important to get points at home."
