Liverpool track audacious swap deal

Arsenal are ready to swap unsettled full-back Gael Clichy with Liverpool target and Everton defender Leighton Baines in an unlikely swap deal, report Metro.

Clichy has yet to begin talks concerning a new deal and had attracted the attention of Juventus, while Bayern Munich were said to be after England defender Baines.

But Arsenal appear clear on disrupting any possible deal for the 26-year-old, including any move by Liverpool, by offering contract rebel Clichy in exchange.

The French defender has refused to discuss a new contract until the end of the season, and fearful that the club may lose him for nothing next year, what to off-load the international this summer.

Liverpool were said to be interested in Baines, who is rated at £10 million as they struggle to fill their left-back position, with Paul Konchesky not expected to return from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest and Fabio Aurelio rarely fit.

However, any move across Stanley Park would be met with huge animosity from the Everton supporters, who have become to idolise Baines for his high work rate and excellent set piece and crossing ability.

The former Wigan player has helped guide the Toffees to the FA Cup quarter-finals and has become Ashley Cole's understudy at left full-back for Fabio Capello's England.

If Baines did make the unlikely move to Liverpool, he would become the 30th player to make the move between the clubs, but unlike at either The Reds or his current club Everton, the left-footed player would be assured Champions League football at Arsenal, as well as a consistent challenge for the league title.
