Rooney strike clinches Blues clash

Wayne Rooney put his disciplinary misery behind him to hand Manchester United a vital 1-0 first-leg lead in their Champions League quarter-final against Chelsea.

Despite being provoked by some ugly tackling, Rooney let his football do the talking at Stamford Bridge, netting a precious away goal following magical play from Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs.

Both sides went close to adding to the score in a match every bit as tight as their famous 2008 final, with Chelsea somehow failing to equalise when Fernando Torres hit the post and Patrice Evra cleared Frank Lampard's follow-up off the line.

The Blues were also denied what appeared a clear-cut stoppage-time penalty when Evra chopped down Ramires.
