Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand has lauded Wayne Rooney’s comeback as a match winning striker, saying the 25 year old is a champion who can single handedly win games for United once more.
"Wayne's a top quality player," Ferdinand told ITV Sport.
"He showed touches of brilliance, great touches and awareness.
“It was a great finish and he was buzzing around all over the pitch today so it was good to see.”
In the last week, Rooney has scored four goals for Manchester United: a hat trick against West Ham to take the side from 2-0 down to eventually win 4-2 with a goal from fellow striker Javier Hernandez, and against Chelsea last night to steal a United victory for the first time at Stamford Bridge in nine years. Fans will no doubt be both relieved and excited that Rooney is back to his best.
"I think he's been showing [his best form] in the last few weeks, we've seen glimpses of his ability to do wonderful stuff at any time of a game and today he was consistent throughout the game," Ferdinand said.
“When he's got that for us, he's some player to play against."
Ferdinand revealed that last night’s tactic to win the game was simply down to good defending and controlling possession.
"Just when we get the ball [we had] to keep it," Ferdinand said.
"We retained the ball well in the first half, not so much in the second half but we defended well.
“You have to defend well at Stamford Bridge and every single one of the players defended with great intensity today.
While Manchester United are now in the driving seat, with the second leg of the Champions League quarter final theirs to lose, Ferdinand isn’t counting his chickens before they hatch.
"It's still in the balance. I think it's a good result for us but it's nowhere near over for us," he said.
“We've got to go to Old Trafford, defend well, stay on our feet and make sure we close it out.
"Don't concede a goal and go through."
