Arsenal have taken Swiss defensive midfielder Kevin Mbabu on trial.

The teenager, who only recently celebrated his 16th birthday, has been added to the club’s junior squad for the prestigious Ferroli Cup in Italy this week.

AC Milan present the first test for Arsenal, who also have Aspire Academy and A.C. Sambonifacesce in their group for a competition they won on penalties back in 2008.

Mbabu is set to go straight into the line-up to face Milan on Thursday, according to YoungGuns, and is following in the footsteps of former Arsenal centre back Philippe Senderos.

The Swiss international joined the Gunners from Servette back in 2003, and Mbabu has followed the same pattern by leaving the Geneva-based outfit for the north London club, although only on a trial basis currently.

Arsenal aren’t the only club interested in the player though, with YoungGuns claiming Mbabu has enjoyed a recent spell with Manchester United.

The Old Trafford outfit are still interested in the player, and Sir Alex Ferguson could invite Mbabu back to the club for a second stint should he remain available.

A Barclays Premier League battle could thus ensue for the prodigy, although Arsenal will be hoping the player is suitably impressed alongside the likes of new signings Leander Siemann and Kristoffer Olsson for the Under 16 side.
