Highly rated Espanyol full back Javi Chica Torres could make a surprise summer move to Everton according to the Daily Mirror.
Toffees boss David Moyes ran the rule over the La Liga star, who shares his name with fellow compatriot and former Liverpool striker Fernando, in a flying visit to Spain earlier this week.
He is preparing to open talks over a free transfer deal, in an attempt to strengthen his Goodison Park playing squad ahead of the new season.
The move would represent a shrewd piece of business by Everton boss Moyes, who has had to tighten the purse strings considerably in recent years due to the Toffees precarious financial situation.
Torres' Bosman move would be in stark contrast to the £50million deal that saw Fernando switch from Everton's Merseyside rivals Liverpool to Chelsea in the recent January transfer window.
But since leaving Anfield for Stamford Bridge, Torres has struggled to find his form, with the weight of expectation, and hefty fee seemingly playing on the mind of the former Liverpool hero.
However, the 25-year-old defender Torres, who is good with both feet and can play at right and left back, featured for Spain at youth level, and is well respected in the domestic league.
Despite the obvious comparisons – name and nationality, with the ex-Liverpool star, Javi Chica's move to Everton would fly comparatively under the radar if it wasn't for additional interest from Barclays Premier League rivals Fulham.
Mark Hughes was also in attendance at the same game as Moyes, and is said to be considering a bid for the same transfer target, so Torres may have a decision to make on where he believes his future will be best served.
