Liverpool 'closing in' on former Anfield ace - reports

Liverpool are reportedly pursuing Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds are 'closing in' on a deal for the American shot-stopper, who is out of contract at Villa Park in the summer.

Friedel spent six years at Anfield after joining Liverpool from Colombus Crew for £1 million in 1997, before moving to Blackburn and, latterly, Villa.

The 39-year-old is not seen as replacement for current Liverpool first-choice 'keeper Pepe Reina, but more as competition for the Spaniard.

Reina has, however, been linked with a move away from Liverpool after former Arsenal goalkeeping coach Bob Wilson revealed Arsene Wenger had earmarked the 28-year-old a potential Gunners no.1.

However, Liverpool have no intention of selling Reina, and the recent resurgence under Kenny Dalglish has convinced the former Villarreal man to remain at Anfield.
