Barcelona winger and Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has praised Real Madrid after Barcelona secured their third successive La Liga title with a draw against Levante.
Despite Madrid’s thumping win over Getafe on Tuesday evening, the Catalan’s needed just a point away at Levante to finish top of La Liga and Seydou Keita’s header set Pep Guardiola’s men on their way.
Felipe Caicedo threatened to spoil the party with an equaliser just before half time, but Barca saw out the draw, to the delight of their Argentine talisman.
“It's taken a lot of hard work to be champions and more so against a great rival like Real Madrid,” he said.
"Now we have to enjoy it."
Coach Guardiola has praised the team’s Spanish players after winning the title following a draining World Cup in South Africa.
"Winning the title is always difficult and this one was tough just like the others were before. Now we can enjoy this win," he said.
"It was difficult coming off the back of the World Cup. Nine Barcelona players won the World Cup (with Spain) and I didn't know how they were going to react. The attitude of all the players has been fantastic and the title is for them."
Midfield maestro Xavi was keen to stress the important of the club’s supporters, who he says deserve their success.
"It's always a nice feeling to win the title and the fans really deserve this," Xavi said.
"I imagine we're going to celebrate this title win with them tonight in the streets of Barcelona."
The Nou Camp side have the chance to complete a memorable double later this month, when they face Manchester United in the Champions League final at Wembley, venue of their first Champions League success in 1992.
