Stewart Downing is starting contract talks with Aston Villa, as his home club push to keep the star from heading to front runners Liverpool.
'I think there have been a couple of conversations already with my agent. I’ve already spoken to the manager who has said he’d like to keep me,” Downing said.
“I’ve still got two years left and they’ve come to me with an offer.
'For a player, that is brilliant because it gives you confidence they have faith in you and that they reward players if they do well.”
Liverpool have been linked through numerous publications to Downing, with the Anfield club reportedly having an offer turned down for the star last summer.
But Downing appears to be making a commitment to Aston Villa, with Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish hoping that the star can change his mind for the right price.
“I’m enjoying my stay here,” Downing said of his time at Villa.
“I’ve enjoyed it since the first day I came. It’s a terrific football club. it’s fantastic they want me.
Liverpool are also reportedly interested in Ashley Young, and though Dalglish has a large budget for the summer transfer period, it is thought that he will decide between Young and Downing, with Villa unwilling to let go of both of their starlets.
