Liverpool and Arsenal look to be trumped on their task to secure the signature of Leighton Baines, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Manchester City have offered the star a £25 million deal.
Roberto Mancini spent 20 minutes speaking to Manchester City chairman Kaldoon Al Mubarak after the FA Cup final victory on Saturday, and the two have reportedly agreed that some big summer buys will take the City squad to new heights.
Leighton Baines is rumoured to be high on Manchester City’s summer transfer wish list, despite interest from both Liverpool and Arsenal.
Liverpool are looking for a solution to their long term left back problem, and after Kenny Dalglish noticed Baines’ stunning performances for Everton over the season, the Anfield club is deciding between him and Newcastle left back Jose Enrique for a big name signing.
This isn’t the first time Liverpool and Manchester City have gone head to head to coax a star move, with the two facing off over eventual City star Joleon Lescott in 2009.
Arsenal, meanwhile, look set to lose French international Gael Clichy after going a sixth straight season without a trophy. The star’s contract with Arsenal expires in June 2012, and Arsene Wenger will need to either agree to a new deal with Clichy by the summer or resign to selling the left back.
Wenger has reportedly taken a personal liking to Baines, and sees the 26-year-old as the perfect replacement for Clichy.
While Clichy said his future was with Arsenal recently, he did point out that winning trophies was important.
“I know that there are rumours about me going elsewhere but I have nothing to say about that,” Clichy said.
“I have always wanted to be at a club where I am content. Money is important but it is not a decisive factor. All I want is to win a title – that’s my ultimate ambition.”
But should City set their sights on Baines, Arsenal will be hard pressed to match any offer the cash rich club can put on the table.
