Clark hoping for Liverpool inclusion

Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark has his sights set on playing a part in the club's season finale against Liverpool this weekend.

Villa take on Kenny Dalglish's Reds at Villa Park on Sunday, and Clark, who has just recovered from a back injury is hoping to feature for Gary McAllister's side.

"I trained Tuesday, came in on Wednesday and did some strength work and trained again on Thursday with the boys," he said.

"It's just a lower-back problem and stiffness which is causing strains on my hamstring and causing them to be tight, so I've just been doing extra work on them before and after training."

Despite the recent injury setback, Clark reflects positively on his breakthrough season with Villa, and the Republic of Ireland international is optimistic he will be given further first-team opportunities, even if this weekend comes too soon for the 21-year-old utility man.

He is a player with undoubted potential, and has shown his versatility in a number of positions having been deployed both at left-back and a more advanced midfield role under manager Gerard Houllier.

"It would be nice to play and be involved. Saying that, the lads did brilliantly at Arsenal last week so it would be hard to change the team after that.

"Hopefully at home we'll have the crowd behind us and we can end the season on a high because the fans have been brilliant."
