Wigan are demanding that Liverpool pay £20 million to sign James McCarthy, it has been claimed.
According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have identified the young midfielder as a ‘top target’ for the transfer window, but the Latics are holding firm over their valuation of the 20-year-old.
McCarthy moved to the DW Stadium in 2009 for just £1.2 million and, along with Liverpool, has reportedly caught the attention of Chelsea after numerous cultured performances.
The fee on the Republic of Ireland international’s head could, of course, be tempered by Wigan’s potential relegation from the Barclays Premier League – a situation that, no doubt, Liverpool will be keeping a keen eye on this afternoon.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez complained on Saturday that the constant speculation linking his key players with moves elsewhere is one of a number of reasons they find themselves in a fight to avoid the drop on the final day of the season.
Winger Charles N’Zogbia has also been linked with a move to Liverpool, while skysports.com previously reported that goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi was on the Anfield radar too.
Liverpool are expected to invest heavily this summer and are also said to be chasing Newcastle full-back Jose Enrique.
