Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Blackburn’s Christopher Samba and West Ham’s Scott Parker at the top of his transfer list, the Express has reported.
After suffering a sixth season without a trophy, Arsenal are looking to make some big purchases to compete with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea next season.
Wenger recently told reporters that he is willing to buck his trend of limited spending in the summer transfer period, with the Arsenal manager finally willing to pay big money for players.
“We will work on strengthening the team. We are definitely in the market, that is for sure,” Wenger said.
“I will try to buy at the right price and to invest. It will be difficult, but I will spend what is needed to spend.”
Cahill has been the target of numerous clubs over the season, with Manchester United long touted to land the defender. But a defender is high on Wenger’s list of needed positions, and with Yahoo Sport rating the 25-year-old at £15 million, the Arsenal manager may stay true to his word about spening big and outbid Manchester United.
Samba, meanwhile, has been valued by the Daily Mail at £12 million, and the paper reports that Wenger has been keeping an eye on the centre back for some time. Samba recently admitted to being open to the possibility of moving away from Blackburn, who were lucky to escape relegation this season.
“I am at an age where I want to try to do something,” Samba said.
“You have only one career and it would be a shame not to make the best of it.”
And lastly, Scott Parker looks set to leave relegated West Ham, with Liverpool and Tottenham also circling the midfielder. Arsenal can offer guaranteed Champions League football next season though, which may tempt Parker to choose the London club for his new home.
