Lionel Messi: The Man With Magic In His Boots

Published Add your comment

Standing at just 5'7" tall and weighing a paltry 67kg, when it comes to betting on football, no player can come close to the payouts that Argentine prodigy Lionel Messi provides.

Still just 23 years of age, the floppy-haired forward is the current top scorer in the Champions League with 11 goals from 12 games - and anybody who has bet on the forward to score at any time in every one of his European performances this season would be sitting on a very tidy profit indeed.

The mesmerising sharp-shooter is to football betting what his countryman Maradona was to Argentina during the 1986 World Cup; a revelation.

On the way to scoring 42 Champions League goals since 2005, Messi top scored in the competition in 2009 and 2010, and is likely to finish top of the pile even if he fails to score in Saturday's Champions League Final v Manchester United.

He currently stands just 31 goals behind Raul as the tournament's all time top goal scorer, yet amazingly the man from Rosario has been even more potent in this year's La Liga. He has bagged an astonishing 31 goals in 33 matches to take his season total to 51 goals and counting, and if ever there was a football betting tip that was worth listening to, it would be to back Messi to lead Argentina to Copa America Glory this summer.

Yet while Messi is undoubtedly the greatest footballer of his generation and the maestro of the Champions League, until the current two-time holder of the FIFA World Player of the Year award wins a World Cup winner's medal, he will continue to be thought of by some as a player who is yet to shape the game on football's biggest stage.
