Former Liverpool playmaker Javier Mascherano has dedicated his Champions League final performance to Merseyside fans, after Barcelona destroyed Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday night.

“I know some Liverpool supporters were disappointed after my exit, they were a little bit sad with me, but this is for them,” Mascherano said.

While Manchester United took over Liverpool’s record of 18 titles this season by winning a 19th, Liverpool still hold the most Champions League trophies in English football, with five European trophies in the Anfield cabinet.

Barcelona ended United’s hopes of winning a fourth cup, and edging closer to Liverpool's record, with their clinical defeat that left pundits confessing that the Spanish giants may be the best side of a generation.

Mascherano, who left Liverpool last year for Barcelona, said that winning the Champions League was a pinnacle in his career.

"We're happy because we were able to play the way we're known to play,” Mascherano said of the match.

"It's really good for us to win the Champions League. For any footballer it's the top title. We had a lot of chances to score and in the second half we took them."
