Joleon Lescott: Time To Step Up

Next Story

Manchester City and England defender Joleon Lescott was paraded in front of the Sky Sports cameras earlier this week ahead of England’s clash with Switzerland. Yet those looking to cash in on football betting on Saturday will have learnt little from the centre half.

Lescott is unlikely to start at Wembley with John Terry and Rio Ferdinand both ahead of the former Everton man in the pecking order, and there were few football tips to latch onto from the 28 year old’s interview.

Lescott offered the same England clichés about not taking the opposition lightly and focusing fully on the match, yet as punters used to betting on football will know, England’s performances rarely live up to their pre-match plans.

Lescott himself has had a stop-start England career having made just 12 appearances for the Three Lions since making his debut in 2007. He has featured in both the left back and centre half slots, yet has been unable to pin down a starting berth under Fabio Capello.

The absence of Manchester City teammate Kolo Toure for much of last season meant the one-time Wolves man was able to make 22 league appearances alongside the outstanding Vincent Kompany. He also popped up with three goals in a vastly improved campaign from his first year at Eastlands.

He has featured in two of England’s Group G games so far this term though, and will be eager to establish himself as first choice cover for the captain and former captain Terry and Ferdinand.

He will face continued competition from Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Everton’s Phil Jagielka for the role, but with Champions League football secured next season, Lescott will be able to test himself against the world’s best strikers on a more regular basis.

For now though, ensuring he takes any England opportunities thrown his way will be Lescott’s number one priority.
