Spurs confirm Friedel capture

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of former Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel on what is reported to be a two-year contract.

The 40-year-old American has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in his position in the Barclays Premier League in recent seasons and is expected to replace Heurelho Gomes as the Spurs No.1.

Friedel had been linked with a return to Liverpool - having moved to Anfield from Colombus Crew in 1997 - but has opted to move to White Hart Lane in the pursuit of regular first-team football.

"Brad is a top goalkeeper of real quality who has great experience," said Spurs boss Harry Redknapp.

"It is good to have three such experienced top goalkeepers at the Club in Gomes, Carlo and now Brad and it means we have competition for places particularly with the number of games we will hopefully face next year both domestically and in Europe as well."
