Liverpool have increased their offer for Jordan Henderson to £18 million to help warn off interest from Manchester United, according to the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail.

The England midfielder has attracted attention after some impressive performances during his break-through season at Sunderland.

And after having a £13 million offer rebuffed by the Black Cats, Liverpool have upped their offer, with United prowling.

The 19-time league champions were originally interested in Henderson mid-way through the season and were said to be the front runners for his signature.

However Liverpool have jumped the gun in the race to sign Henderson, who will play with the England Under 21's in the European Championships this summer.

Reports suggests that this second bid will thwart the efforts of United to sign the 20-year-old.

United are still searching for a replacement for Paul Scholes, who announced his retirement last week, while Liverpool are looking to build a squad capable of qualifying for the Champions League.
