New Tottenham signing Brad Friedel has warned Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini that he is determined to be given the No.1 jersey at White Hart Lane.
The 40-year-old signed a two-year contract with Spurs last week after leaving Aston Villa and has now set his sights on becoming Harry Redknapp's first choice goalkeeper.
Friedel has made an incredible 266 consecutive league appearances - a testament to his fitness and professional attitude - and is not intent on relinquishing his record just yet.
“I hope to be in the starting 11 but that’s down to Harry [Redknapp]," the American shot-stopper told talkSPORT.
“What I am going to do is do my bit during the off season and turn up to pre-season as fit as I possibly can and hopefully be the number one."
Harry Redknapp's powers of persuasion have seen him pull off a number of transfer coups in the past, and the Spurs boss did well to keep Friedel out of the clutches of Liverpool.
The lure of potential first-team football and the chance to work with one of the most popular manager's in the game proved to hard to refuse for the veteran shot-stopper, who has already paid tribute to his new boss.
“Harry Redknapp was a big reason for me to come here, I played with Jamie [Redknapp] years and years ago and have always got along well with Harry," Fridel added.
“I like what I heard coming out of Tottenham, they are a club on the up, it’s well documented that had I moved to Liverpool it would have been as a number two.
“I just felt that if I was sign anywhere as a number two that would effectively be signing my retirement.
“I didn’t sign anywhere for the money, I signed to play and the chance to compete for my place with the exciting players.
“I really feel Tottenham have the chance to get into that top four."
