Liverpool target Spanish starlet as second £20m signing - reports

Liverpool have set their transfer sights on Spanish winger Juan Mata, according to reports.

The Valencia star has been linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League on a number of occasions, with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson a previous admirer of the player.

However, it's Liverpool who have been courting the player more recently, with the Merseysiders' interest steming back to when Rafael Benitez was manager at Anfield.

Despite a couple of changes in manager since the Benitez era, the Reds are thought to have been tracking Mata for the past few months, with reports in the Metro in May claiming a £20 million move was being prepared.

Fresh reports in Spain claim Liverpool are again considering their options in relation to the 23-year-old, with the financial situation at the Mestalla stadium making it tough for the La Liga outfit to turn down an offer.

Kenny Dalglish has money at his disposal this summer, with owners Fenway Sports Group vowing to back the Liverpool manager once again this summer.

Jordan Henderson's £20 million move to Liverpool earlier in the week proved the club have money to spend, and a winger is thought to be one of the additional priorities for the Merseysiders in the transfer window.

Stewart Downing, Eden Hazard and Keisuke Honda have also been linked with an Anfield switch in recent weeks, and Dalglish looks set to make a move for at least one player in the position sooner rather than later.
