Manchester United have launched a bid for French defender Raphael Varane, according to RMC.

United have been long tipped to make a move for Varane and following the signing of Phil Jones, Sir Alex Ferguson looks ready to pounce.

But United will face competition from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon.

When speaking to France Football about his future, Varane said: "I know I have the choice. I can sign [for a foreign club] and move abroad, or I could join another club in Ligue 1.

"What interests me is playing regularly and so I have to think carefully and go to a club that will allow me to progress."

The United target has played 23 times for the France under-21's, but his form couldn't help Lens avoid the drop to Ligue 2 last season.

United have also been linked with Gary Cahill to help shore up their defence, with Wes Brown and John O'Shea on the verge of leaving.
