Manchester United will learn if their bid to sign defender Raphael Varane is successful in the next 48 hours, according to his club, Lens' president Gervais Martel.

The 18-year-old is highly coveted throughout Europe with Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid also interested.

But United, who have been tracking the teenager for some months, are favourites to land the Frenchman, and will learn the fate of their £9 million bid in the next two days.

"Given the clubs involved, it would be very hard to stop him [from moving]," Martel told La Voix du Nord.

"I hope this will be finalised in the next 48 hours - I have just spent four hours on the phone, and there are many things to settle."

United have already bolstered their defensive options with the signing of 19-year-old Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers, and are looking to the future again with the potential signing of Varane.

Both Madrid and United are expected to offer Lens with the option of loaning Varane back to France for next season, with the player keen for first team football next season.
