United new boy will be ready to answer the call

Manchester United's newest recruit Phil Jones is keen to take every opportunity at Old Trafford with both hands after his move from Blackburn Rovers.

The 19-year-old made the switch across Lancashire following interest from Liverpool and was paired with United team-mate Chris Smalling during the Under-21 European Championships.

And Jones is keen to prove himself whenever called upon, and would relish the chance to partner Smalling for his club.

“I have got to go home first, go on a few holidays and chill out for a little bit. Hopefully I will get a call from the gaffer and I’m looking forward to that," he said.

“Everyone knows United are one of the biggest clubs on the planet. It’s a massive move for me and I just can’t wait to get started. It’s a massive challenge.”

Of his partnership with Smalling at international level – one for the future for United, no doubt – Jones added: “Chris is a fantastic player. I enjoy playing with him and we complement each other well. Hopefully we can do that in the future.

“Chris has shown that you can go in there and play games for United. He has done extremely well. The gaffer has shown he is not afraid to put young faces in the team. When I get the chance I am confident I will take it.”
