Liverpool wing wizard target to open £18m transfer door - reports

Liverpool target Stewart Downing is reportedly ready to try and force a move from Aston Villa this summer.

The Villains are desperate to keep hold of the England international following Ashley Young's departure to Manchester United last week, but reports in the Daily Mail claim Alex McLeish is now resigned to losing the 26-year-old.

General reports in the British media claim Downing has been told to hand in a transfer request if he wants to secure a Liverpool move, with The Independent going on to claim that the former Middlesbrough star will do that this week.

Liverpool have been linked with a handful of wingers this summer, with Charles N'Zogbia, Eden Hazard and Aaron Lennon all speculatively place on the Anfield radar.

Dalglish has already invested heavily this summer with the reported £20 million addition of midfielder Jordan Henderson a fortnight ago, and a left back and striker are also thought to be transfer priorities for Liverpool this summer.

With the Scottish boss back financially on Merseyside by owners Fenway Sports Group, the spending shows no sign of stopping at Liverpool and Downing is next on the Reds' agenda.
