Newcastle United forward Hatem Ben Arfa is gearing up for pre-season after a sorry first year at St James's Park.

The Frenchman enjoyed a fruitful start to his Newcastle career before suffering a double leg break against Manchester City after Nigel De Jong's late challenge in October.

But with a full pre-season ahead of him, Ben Arfa is keen to hit the ground running.

The player's English-based adviser Simon Stainrod said: “Hatem has been signed off the sick list and has been for a couple of weeks.

"He's doing fine - he's on holiday at the moment but he's absolutely desperate to get back in amongst things.

"He'll be back at Newcastle for the start of pre-season and while nothing is ever certain with anyone, he'll really benefit from a full pre-season."
