Rangers boss reveals contact over Arsenal defender

Ally McCoist is keen to bring Arsenal defender Kyle Bartley back to Rangers next season, and has revealed he has already had preliminary talks with counterpart Arsene Wenger.

However, the Gunners manager told McCoist that he will not be making an decisions on the future of Bartley until he has run the rule of the 20-year-old during pre-season.

"It would be great to have him back," said the Rangers boss. "I spoke to Arsene Wenger and Arsene wants to have a good look at Kyle in pre-season before he makes any decision on anything.

"I can totally understand his view. He is absolutely, 100 percent within his rights and I would do exactly the same. He doesn't need to look at his players just now."

Bartley made nine appearances for Rangers having moved to Ibrox from Arsenal on loan during the January transfer window, but his stay in Glasgow was cut short by a knee injury in March.

The former England youth international has since expressed a desire to return to Rangers unless, of course, Arsenal can guarantee him regular football.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to bolster their defence in the coming weeks and, according to reports on Tuesday, the Gunners have opened discussions with Bolton over the proposed signing of Gary Cahill.
