Former Tottenham midfield favourite Ossie Ardiles believes the club have a fight on their hands to return to the top four this season.
Harry Redknapp's side reached the quarter-finals of Europe's elite club competition during their debut campaign, but slipped to fifth in the Barclays Premier League and have therefore failed to qualify for the Champions League again.
Ardiles, a former Argentine international and Spurs star, expects the competition to be extremely tough at the top of the league in the coming campaign, and thinks Spurs may struggle to force a return unless they spend this summer.
"It’s going to be very hard indeed for Harry to break back into the top four," he told talkSPORT.
“Harry has done an extremely good job, when he arrived we were fighting relegation and has taken Tottenham to the Champions League, and now we're not in that we are still in Europe and that is a great achievement.
"It's going to be very, very hard because all the big clubs are buying and buying big though. Some players have already arrived and some are going to arrive, certainly for Chelsea, Manchester City and so on.”
