Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Mehdi Abeid, from Lens on a five-year deal.

The 18-year-old joins following a successful trial at St James's Park, and has represented France at Under-17 and Under-18 level.

Reserve team manager Peter Beardsley said: "We are delighted bring Mehdi to the club.

"He is a bright, young talent and we think he has an exciting future ahead of him.

"After an impressive trial with us earlier in the year, I'm looking forward to working with Mehdi and developing his talent.

"

The Frenchman becomes Newcastle's fourth signing of the summer, following Sylvain Marveaux, Demba Ba and Yohan Cabeye.

Boss Alan Pardew said: “I am really pleased with the way the squad is taking shape. I’m excited.”
