Scunthorpe United have given up in their pursuit of Manchester United starlet Nicky Ajose.

The Iron chief is well aware of Ajose's talent from the player's time on loan at Bury, scoring 13 goals for the Shakers last term, predominantly under Knill at Gigg Lane.

However, the relegated Lincolnshire side have been unable to agree a deal with the Red Devils over bringing the player to Npower League One, and expect the England youth international to play at a higher level next term.

"We believe that Nicky is probably going to go elsewhere, to the Championship," Knill admitted to the Scunthorpe Telegraph.

"Good luck to him. I have always said he is a good player. The good thing is that we have been part of his development.

"That is our job to help players achieve their potential."
