Alexis Sanchez: Can the wonderkid light up the Copa?

For European football managers and football betting punters, the Copa America is without doubt one of the most preeminent events in global football.

While the managers hunt for potential additions to their squads at knockdown prices, the punters lavish over the flood of extra betting markets available to them where they’ll hope to find value.

One player who’ll be under the spotlight in Argentina this month will be 22-year-old Chilean Alexis Sanchez. On the verge of joining European champions Barcelona for upwards of €30million, the Udinese winger has already disappointed a handful of Europe’s biggest clubs by rejecting them.

And with his future almost done and dusted, football betting fans will be able to fully focus on just what the mercurial winger is capable of on the pitch.

He bagged 12 goals in his 27 starts for Udinese last year and managed a total of 71 shots. Playing from a wide right position, the tricky winger more than doubled his goal tally from the previous season and looks to have matured into the real deal.

Sanchez and Chile will face an intriguing battle in Group C where they are current joint favourites to win the group along with Uruguay. But they’ll also have to face a tough Mexican side who are coming into the tournament off the back of a Gold Cup win. Chile can be backed at 12/1 to win the tournament outright.

Still only 22, Sanchez has an abundance of experience having already won three titles back in South America. He won two titles for Colo Colo after being loaned to them soon after Udinese signed him in 2005 before also winning the Argentine Clausura with the now relegated River Plate in 2008.

In comparison to Arsenal FC, whose entire playing squad have managed zero Premier League titles between them, Sanchez is proof that a lack of experience cannot always be put down to youth. Watch this space.
