Oldham boss Paul Dickov has praised the quality of the trialists training with the club during pre-season.

But Dickov would not confirm whether any would be offered permanent deals at the club. He told the club's official website: "A lot of the trialists we had last pre-season were recommended by coaches and agents and, quite frankly, they were not up to the task.

"This year we have looked at their football backgrounds and pedigrees. We have been more selective in the players we have brought in and the quality is a lot better."

He added: "In fact some of them have stood out.

"We will have to see what happens, but we have a head start by them being here."

A miserable run of form saw the Latics' play-off hopes fade last season but they are targeting promotion this time around.
